Leading technologies deliver leadership
Mitsubishi Motors’ dedication to research and engineering has delivered a vehicle that leads the segment in many ways. The company’s commitment to the Canadian market and experience on the ground means the Outlander PHEV brings a technologically advanced vehicle that Canadian drivers can confidently embrace for the real driving conditions we experience.
The All-new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV’s heart is its sophisticated drivetrain. Designed to further enhance its EV appeal, it offers a smoother, more responsive and quieter drive, with sharper acceleration and longer EV only driving range.
An Evolved PHEV System
The all-new Outlander PHEV model employs twin-motor AWD that consists of one motor at the front and another one at the rear of the vehicle. By taking advantage of the electric motors’ characteristic quick response, high precision and freedom in controlling the front and rear motors, the system optimally distributes the driving force between the front and rear wheels according to road and driving conditions. The EV-based PHEV system provides a unique drive feel that prioritizes smooth drive feel, quick acceleration and outstanding all-wheel drive.
The total motor output of the new twin electric motors is up more than 40%, giving the vehicle exhilarating power balanced between front and rear wheels. It allows for up to 54% power to the rear wheels to help Canadians conquer even the toughest winters.
The front axle motor generates 114HP, up from 80HP, while taking up a similar space within the vehicle. The rear motor achieves 134HP, up from 90HP previously. The rear motor features a new, integrated motor control unit occupying a smaller space than before, enabling the new Outlander PHEV to offer a three-row seating configuration for the first time.
The twin electric system also enhances Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC)₁, Mitsubishi Motors’ all-wheel drive system. S-AWC benefits from the electric motors’ instant torque response, delivering drive to the wheels that can best deploy it faster than is possible from a conventional tail shaft driven AWD system.
The new drive battery is situated low in the chassis, fitted between the axles for optimum weight distribution. At 20 kWh, its storage capacity is 45 per cent larger than the previous version’s 13.8 kWh system.
The new battery and twin electric motors are mated to a revised, specifically-tuned, Atkinson cycle 2.4-litre combustion engine.
S-AWC Leading All Wheel Drive System Evolved
Mitsubishi Motors’ S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control) provides unprecedented AWD performance so Canadians can conquer our terrain in all seasons. The integrated S-AWC System, based on an all-new front- and rear-mounted electric twin motor AWD system, has a new brake AYC (Active Yaw Control) function for the rear wheels. The twin motor system allows the Outlander PHEV to distribute the driving force to the front and rear wheels optimally, according to road and driving conditions, while AYC manages torque vectoring by controlling the brakes on the left and right for the front and rear wheels. This makes it possible to extract the maximum performance from all four tires in a more balanced manner, delivering handling true to the driver’s intention and high operating stability.
Seven drive modes can be selected depending on road surface conditions and driving style. Normal is the basic mode, optimized for normal driving on paved roads. Tarmac mode provides brisk acceleration response and high-cornering performance on dry paved surfaces. Gravel mode provides balanced operability and road handling ability on unpaved or wet paved roads, and Snow mode delivers stable vehicle behavior on snowy and other slippery roads. Mud mode optimizes tire slippage according to vehicle speed for superior road handling on muddy roads and deep trenches of snow, while also providing better ability to escape when stuck. Modes that can be used according to driving style are Power mode, which delivers powerful acceleration when needed, and Eco mode which prioritizes economic and environmentally friendly driving.
Three Rows for Family Flexibility
While full specs and features will be shared before the on sale date, new to the all-new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a third row seat for maximum flexibility as standard equipment.
Bold new appearance and appointments
Capturing the success of the new Mitsubishi Outlander, The Outlander PHEV adds to its appeal with dramatic exterior and luxurious interior design plus a long list of safety and personality inspired convenience features. New to Outlander PHEV will be the availability of an elegant two-tone roof option at the highest trim levels and for the first time massage front seats.
Dynamic Shield highlights striking exterior design
The fourth-generation Mitsubishi Outlander’s distinctive exterior was crafted under the Japanese ‘I-Fu-Do-Do’ philosophy.
Translating as ‘Authentic and Majestic’, this ethos is reflected in the vehicle’s bold proportions, muscular fenders and the chiselled lines of the next-generation ‘Dynamic Shield’ grille.
The use of strong horizontal design lines emphasize width, with specially-designed 18-inch and 20-inch (depending on trim) road wheels creating a powerful road presence.
High-quality interior appointments, without sacrificing practicality
Matching the bold, upmarket interior, the All-new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV features an interior that melds luxurious fixtures and materials with impressive family practicality.
The Outlander’s interior design team focused on improved seat comfort, reduced NVH levels and high-quality materials usage at key touchpoints throughout the cabin.
Connectivity
The All-new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV features cutting-edge connectivity, with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android AutoTM 3 (wired).
An intuitive 9.0-inch central infotainment touchscreen is available and all models feature a stunning 12.3-inch full colour digital instrument cluster. This highly customizable display features multiple display options and extended contents that are PHEV-specific, including an energy flow meter, kWh consumption information and total EV driving time calculator.
For additional driver engagement, a 10.8-inch full-colour windscreen projection Head Up Display is available depending on trim.
Impressive safety
The all-new Outlander PHEV is equipped with an evolved MI-PILOT Assist single-lane driver assistance technology for highways. The control system integrates Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) to assist the driver in maintaining distance between vehicles while keeping in the center of the lane. It also detects speed limit signs and automatically adjusts the set speed accordingly. MI-PILOT with Navi-link utilizes map data to automatically adjust vehicle speed as needed according to curves, forks, and other circumstances on highways. Also, the vehicle can automatically start within about 30 seconds of stopping in traffic, alleviating fatigue on the highway.
Key highlights of the active safety suite₂₃₄₅₆ available on Outlander PHEV include:
- Forward Collision Mitigation system, with pedestrian detection
- Lane Keep Assist
- Lane Departure Prevention
- Lane Departure Warning
- Blind Spot Warning
- Traffic Sign Recognition
- Driver Attention Alert
Mitsubishi Connect
Mitsubishi Connect is adopted for more safety, security and comfort behind the wheel. The user can easily access emergency assistance, check the travelable distance of the drive battery, set charging times and alerts to avoid forgetting to charge, and display the location of a parked vehicle on the smartphone app map to see where it is located. Mitsubishi Connect also has a parental control function that sends notifications of vehicle driving status.
Leading Warranty
The Outlander PHEV comes with a fully transferable 10-year/160,000-km powertrain and battery limited warranty as well as a fully transferable 5-year /100,000-km comprehensive warranty, and 5-year unlimited kilometre roadside assistance.
